Awesome lens!!!
Short version: This is a great lens... very well made, effective, versatile, and performs impressively. A great investment for anyone wanting a lens that really can 'do it all'.Long version: I got this lens as an upgrade from my original Sony 18-55 lens, since I wanted a lens with a little more zoom capability (and some close-up as well) without having to switch back and forth between the 18-55 for wide angle and a bulky telephoto for higher zoom.I was worried a little bit by reviews of the similar Tamron 18-250 lens because some reviewers claimed it had slower focus times and zoom slip.Well, with this lens, I've not noticed any difference in focusing speed or had any problem with the zoom slipping; the zoom itself is tight and the autofocus is spot-on (I have mediocre eyesight, so AF is pretty important for me). Colors are vibrant, the view is clear... everything is good with this lens so far. I'm very pleased and not at all remorseful about...

A perfect match
My wife uses the Tamron 18-250 on her Alfa 100. The results are good no more, no less and it is difficult to focus when there is not enough contrast.I must say I used this lens on my Minolta 7D. I got faster results with this camera but again the pictures were good, no more no less.With the Sony 18-250 on my (new) Alfa 700, this is another story. This couple is damn fast; only in a few occasions did I have some difficulties to focus. I shot already 1000 pictures at the sea side, in mountain areas, in a desert; I am happy to report that I got accurate colors (those I actually saw) and distortion free pictures.If you want to travel light, the couple Alfa 700/Sony 18-250 is a must. It is a kind of standard lens along with the Sony 11-18 that I rate 5 stars too.Simply amazing.

Very good, but not magic.
I've only had a chance to take a few hundred shots with this lens so far, but I'm fairly impressed. It's an excellent zoom lens considering the large range it covers; making it a very good "all-purpose" lens. It's clearly better than the kit lens in their overlapping range, focuses pretty quick, and offers much greater zoom, but there's still some noticeable barrel distortion at 18 to 21mm or so, and some softness and light loss at the tele end as expected. You can definately beat this lens with the right smaller range lenses or primes, but you'll pay a LOT more and have more to carry around.

a travel photographer's dream
As a professional landscape photographer who feels compelled to carry a wide variety of lenses, I found this lens has helped me lighten my carry on case. This is a versitile lens that provides fine steady quality under most landscape conditions. It replaces 3 lenses that I used to carry on my travels. The reproduction quality that I get from most enlargements from my new alpha 700 with this lens is top quality. As others note, I wish it had sturdier materials but if it gets banged up, it is reasonably inexpensive to replace. If you add a set of macro filters, it does a great macro job on flora. You will find that on most shoots, you will likely use this lens over 75% of the time. That helps keep the dust and dirt from getting on the sensor when you change more frequently as I used to do.

Good range for all-in-one design
If you're going with the Alpha 100, and looking for a good, all-in-one design, then look no further.Built specifically for digital, this is the Konica-Minolta 18-200 lens repackaged for the Sony, which included a bit of restyling. Optically, this is a solid performer. It's not cutting edge technology, and won't hold up to the rigors of professional photojournalism, but it's small, lightweight, and give you a tremendous zoom range.Even with the Alpha's anti-dust technology, it's still best to keep the dust out in the first place. There's no better way than to minimize the changing of lenses.For other options, look at the Tamron 18-200 for Maxxum mount (which Sony has adopted as the Alpha mount). Yes, the two lenses do look VERY similar! If you're wanting more top-end range, look at the Tamron 28-300. Within a whisker of a $2,000 Nikon lens - at the same apertures
I spent five hours yesterday comparing pictures from this lens (which I thought would be markedly inferior) on a Sony A100 with those from a friend's Nikon D200 ($1,400 today) with a 70-200mm f2.8 lens ($2,000). I had decided to sell my setup and spend the money on the Nikon to get the additional sharpness I thought it had and was just doing the test to be sure. I'm glad I did because I got a surprise.We set up the cameras one after the other on the same tripod, in the same position, in the same lighting, shot the same object, both used spot focus, controlled ASA and aperture plus used automatic, shot at 70mm and 200mm and then compared 100% crops of pictures from both. Using 100% crops to compare is a severe test.A 100% crop is looking at a portion of an image displayed on a monitor when the picture is allowed to scroll way off the screen. That way, rather than looking at a 3872 x 2592 pixel image squeezed into perhaps a 5"x7" print which would be VERY...
