I thought I had a bad unit with LINK ERROR on two different cars. You will never see the MAXISCAN MS300 display on the LCD, as described in the manual. Here are the real steps to follow:1. With the ignition off plug it in. I immediately saw CAN OBD2 on the LCD.2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. This is the position just before you crank the starter. Do not start the vehicle.3. Then press the ENTER button on the reader which starts the scan.4. Use the SCROLL button on the reader to view the results.This is a handy tool, but almost any auto parts store will do a free code scan for you (Auto Zone, O'Reilly, Champion...), so that might be a cheaper way to go if you don't expect to use it much. An auto repair shop can charge you $100 or more to do the same, depending on where you are in the country.The manufacturers website http://www.auteltech.com/index.htm and manual appear to be done by a novice "Chinese to English"... Inexpensive & gets the job done
I purchased this because my car failed an inspection due to a DTC for the catalytic converter. Rather than dropping the +$200 the mechanic wanted, I bought this and was able to reset the codes. Then I drove around until the reader said that all the eleven OBD II Readiness Monitors (or I/M Monitors) defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were ready. Viola - it passed inspection.The reader does have all the bells and whistle such as telling the description of the DTC codes, but it does have the generic ones in the back of the manual & there is software on the CD which I didn't need but looks like it includes a list of manufactures DTC's in addition the generic.The support site is: http://www.auteltech.com/supports.htm & there is download there for the software as well. Great basic code reader/eraser.
I have used this for over a year and a half now and have not had a problem with it. It reads the codes including P which some other reviewer could not seem to get it to do. The problem I had with my car was a stuck open thermostat so the light would come on every 2 or 3 days. I was easily able to retrieve the code, verify it was still the same problem, and erase it to turn off the light for over a year till I finally got the thermostat replaced. The light has lit up for other codes too, so I could check the problem before taking it to the mechanic to make sure he was telling me the truth.

This scanner is specifically designed to work with all OBD II compliant vehicles (all 1996 and newer cars & trucks that are OBD II compliant). There are a small number of 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles that are also compliant. To see if your car is OBD II compliant, check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information Label which is located under the hood or by the radiator of most vehicles. If the vehicle is compliant, the label will designate "OBD II Certified" and will have a 16-pin OBDII Standard Socket. Not the fanciest but works well for amateurs
Sure, many auto parts stores will read your codes for free, but you have to drive there during their hours and wait for someone to become available. It's like making prints of digital photos. Sure, Wal-Mart will do it for pennies, but it's not that expensive to own your own photo printer. When I saw how affordable this reader was, I couldn't think of a good reason not to own one.I only have one car and I'm not the type who is likely to do any repairs myself other than changing bulbs, fuses, filters, wiper blades, etc. Therefore, I wasn't interested in spending more to get a code reader with fancier display, more buttons, or wider compatibility. I just wanted to be able to see the error codes and look them up so I would have some idea of what was going on BEFORE I started dealing with mechanics.At first, I was completely ignorant about where to find my OBD II socket. Did what I needed it to do
Instead of paying the dealer $90 to read why my airbag light was on, I bought this reader for my 2002 New Beetle. I was able to determine the cause of the light and reset/clear the code and turn the light off. The cause was a common thing across all VWs with wiring connectors becoming loose beneath the seats (most newer VWs have airbags in the seats) which causes the airbag light to go on. I was also able to see other codes that didn't cause any lights to come on. Great little reader and the supplied CD has a 200+ page PDF file with all the VW codes and what they are. Reliable Handheld Automotive Diagnostics for VW and Audi Models Beginning in the 1980s new vehicles began to be wired with a variety of computerized diagnostic systems designed to improve efficiencies, simplify troubleshooting and minimize the need for repairs. These systems produce indicators known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) internally, usually indicating something out of the ordinary by illuminating the "check engine"/malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard of your car. In the 1990s these systems, codes and the hardware connectors used to access them were standardized in North America as OBD (onboard diagnostics) and later OBD-II. Europe uses the equivalent EOBD, but Volkswagen and Audi vehicles also use another diagnostic standard system, VAG. Unofficially this acronym can be taken to stand for "Volkswagen Audi Group."

The Roadi RDT45 VAG basic diagnostic scan tool is specially designed to work with most Volkswagen and Audis sold worldwide beginning in 1990. If your VW/AUDI model has a 16-pin OBD-II style Data Link Connector(DTC), the RDT45 code reader will certainly work. If it has an old-style 2x2 Data Link Connector (DTC), then it depends on whether there are 4 or 3 wires connecting to the pins. If there are 4 wires, each connecting a pin, then it will work. If there are only 3 wires, leaving one pin disconnected, then it will not. To use, simply plug the RDT45 code reader cable connector into the corresponding data port in your vehicle, usually located near the dashboard or gearshift, while the engine is off. Then switch the ignition on and scroll to the right menu option users can gain access to generic and vehicle specific VAG and OBD-II codes related primarily to the engine, transmission, airbag and ABS systems that trigger MIL events. Definitions for the DTCs can be found in your manual or via the CD definitions lists in on the CD included. Recently the "Check Engine" light illuminated on the dashboard of my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, and I used this as an excuse to purchase a code reader. I chose the Equus 3030 based on price, richness of user interface, and sophistication of the company's website (Innova).I was not looking for a high-end tool, with battery-backed up memory and an internal list of code descriptions. Ideally, I will seldom use this tool, and using the manual (or even better, the company's website) to look up codes works fine for me. So I have to write down the code on a piece of paper, and take that to my computer, rather than the unit remembering it for me. Plus, no batteries to go dead while the tool sits in my toolbox.I did appreciate the extra indicators on the LCD display, and the Green/Yellow/Red LEDs for quickly checking the status of the system. Future Proof
This is what it is and does what it does. It is a basic bare bones code reader (doesn't give you any live telemetry data) but has the advantage of being future proof. This is one of the most affordable code readers that works with the older On-Board Diagnostics (OBDII) and the newer Controller-area network (CAN or CAN-bus). CAN has been in use by some car manufacturers since the 1990's but as of 2008 all new cars sold in the U.S. are required to use CAN. Both protocols use the same type of connector on most cars. Even if you have a car that is OBDII don't be tempted to save a few bucks on an OBDII only reader; you're bound to have a CAN type car in the future.It is well made, the LCD and status lights are highly readable and the controls are simple and easy to learn. Easy to use trouble code reader at great price
As a backyard mechanic I was frustrated with the new cars and the check engine light that results in a $60 charge to read at a garage. Now that the price of a reader is less than $80 it makes sense to try the Equus Innova 3030 car reader and I was happy I did. It works great and is easy to use but does have a minor problem I discovered. My Subaru would not communicate with the 3030. The tech support phone line was tied up, but they quickly responded to my email and sent me a new Innova 3030 with a new chip set. Apparently Subarus, Mazdas and Volkswagons tend to have a problem in communication and in this case require a newer chip set in the 3030 which apparently works on all brands (I checked my Honda and toyota OK), so if you have one of the former car brands ask for the newer chip set. The manual has one misprint and the key must be turned to on position before plugging the 3030 into the car. Tech support at the website was great and called back later. I had already saved $60... Excellent noise isolation and cancelling - especially for bass response and clarity
Update 29 April 2012 - Still going strong on both ear buds and over ears. Also bought most of my family these - they make excellent gifts and encourage a more pleasant travel experience to come and visit :-) Lastly - the new iPad - excellent audio quality compared to my old iPod. Meet my needs
I travel constantly (40+ weeks/year) and have owned Sony over the ear noise canceling headphones for a couple of years. I finally quit carrying them with me due to limited space available in my computer bag, ear fatigue from the noise canceling, and feedback when you tried to lean your head against a pillow on a long flight (which isn't possible to do comfortably with the over the ear design anyway).For a few weeks I used the ear buds from my Creative Zen and while they were convenient, the didn't fit well, so music quality was poor. I also missed having the active noise canceling and had to have the volume up pretty high to hear the music over everything.I chose the Audio Technica ATH-ANC3 headphones before there were any reviews on Amazon, but based my decision on the reviews for their active noise canceling headphones and ear buds.When I first received them, I fitted what I thought would be the proper ear pieces and was less than impressed with... I bought them both.
I recently purchased both the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC3 QuietPoint Noise-Canceling In-Ear Headphones and the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones. One for me and one for my partner. I used the over the ear one on a recent 8hr flight. Loved them! The sound leak is pretty bad, however, on a plane you could not hear it. At home, others in the room can hear the music just as much at you can. The music tone is great! High, mid and low tones can all be heard. Comfort was good and I did not find them tight. My ears got hot after about 3 hours, no big deal. I just took them off for a sec. The noise cancel was wonderful, not great with out audio. They are big and it makes it difficult to sleep on a plane.The in ear type was much better. The noice cancelling was amazing, with or without audio. I was completly blown away.
