Everything you need to know about traction cables...
There are a confusing array of tire chains/traction control devices on the market, and even this particular company makes so many different models that it's hard to tell which ones are the best. Here's what you need to know about chains and traction control devices, and why I like the ones made by SCC. I also include some installation hints at the bottom of this review. There are two broad types of traction control devices: Tire chains and traction control cables. Tire chains are actual chain links. Traction control cables are long pieces of metal cables, covered in a plastic coating, and designed to form a Z-pattern over your tires. The plastic coating is then surrounded by hundreds of tiny, round, metal springs. Cables are generally regarded as better because they are easier to install, last longer, are less damaging to roads, and work better with vehicles equipped with ABS. strong cable chains for tires
These are the ones you want to get for your personal safety and peace of mind. Easy to put on and off. You don't have to even move the car to put them on. I have a Toyota Prius and these are much better than what the dealer sold me, for not much more money. You get what you pay for. For me, the extra cost is worth it because these are heavy duty cables for low tire clearance cars and the ease of putting them on is important, especially if you are out in the snow, in a storm or such. You will not regret buying these cables. I returned the unused "dealer cables" back to the Toyota dealer and felt like saying to them "for shame"...(they were so chinsey)...but I was nice and didn't do that. I just told them the truth...that these cables were far superior. Thankx!

Tire Cables work great and very quick to put on.
My first time using these was great. Record snow storm in So Cal mountains required cables and i never lost traction and only took about 3 minutes each wheel to install. Once your experienced- allow 2 min/per wheel. The split design that allows you to install them without driving onto them is perfect. Removal only takes about 1-2 min/per wheel. I ended up having to drive on them for 3 miles on bare roads without any problems or signs of wear. I also was able to plow through 2 feet of packed snow in a Honda minivan. Update- for rims that bulge out in the middle, the tighteners may rub on it leaving a mark. It just depends on your wheel style.

I have found this to be the best of three different after-market TPMS that I've tried. This valve attachment location has proven more durable than the band technique. The simultanous four-time readout is more user-friendly than those readouts that require a button to be pushed repeatedly to change among multiple tires. Excellent product, works exactly as described.
After having read reviews and researched Hella TC-400 and Orange Electronic P409s kits, I decided on the P409s because it is less expensive, less complicated to install, displays 4 tire pressure readings simultaneously and has one small display unit (vs a display unit AND receiver that the TC-400 requires). I installed the sensors myself onto brand new 18" BMW aluminum alloys and had my shop use a dial-type torque wrench to torque the valves (included in the kit) down to 4 newton meters (~35 inch pounds), exactly as the Orange Electronic P409s manual states. If you don't have a dial type torque wrench (not clicker), then you'll need one to install this kit. I then had them mount the tires on and as soon as they pressurized the tires, the sensors turned on. ...and highly recommended if you don't. Bought this device from another online vendor because Amazon had not yet started carrying it. This one gets only 4 1/2 stars because depending on where you place it, the display might not be readable in bright light conditions. However, the audible alarm will promptly alert you of anything headed south with your tire pressures.(UPDATE Dec 04, 2011: As of this date, I still own this Subaru and have put an ADDITIONAL 100,000 miles on it since the failure of the center differential that was suspected of being caused by one chronically low tire over the first 80,000+ miles under the most extreme of driving conditions with no hint of the second differential encountering a similar issue. While the potential consequences for damaging an expensive drive line component in an AWD system due to one low tire would appear to be arguable in theory as discussed by one knowledgeable commenter, the tolerances in today's AWD...

It takes work but it does the job
For the price that these were going for, I should really give it 4 stars, but its about the product and not the price. These chains will work well enough for a decent amount of snow and has never steered me wrong. They take some effort putting them on and taking them off. They are safe on your tires and I've never had a problem with them rubbing and they are still lasting after two trips to the snow (yeah, it hasn't been that many times) But for 24$ a set, using them twice already paid for itself. I do want to make a suggestion though. Put them on at home. Figure out how many links it takes to secure the inner part of the chains to have it seat properly. Once you know this, when you install them in the snow, just hook up the inner side of the chains the same amount of links. Drive forward a little and link the outside. If you've done it properly, your chains should be tight enough without having to constantly check if they need to be tightened.

Works great in Snow
So I got some of these from the local Napa, They were great. Paid 2x what Amazon charges. They are amazing in snow. I drive a low provile BMW 3 series. It cannot handle 3 inches of snow on my street tires. With these chains I was pushing thru ice and 8 inches of snow like it was the race track. Only problem I had with them is even stay under 30mph on bare road, they wore out rather quickly. I need these to get in and out of the side streets I live on, but the main roads are generally clear. They did last about 5 weeks of daily use, then they pretty much fell apart. After you lose 1 link, you might as well junk em, as the rest will go rather shortly. I'm buying my second set now. At this price I'll buy em every 5 weeks if I have to. (BTW i'm a Cali boy, and i got moved to Eire, PA so you can an idea of my problem)Update Jan 2012: As I mentioned before, at this low cost, the chains were a pretty good option. At 5 weeks they took on about 500 miles or so before wearing...

Tales from My Little Mountain
First I would like to say that for those of you suggesting I get "real tire chains"... I have 2 pair that I've managed to get onto my tires exactly... never. If you'd like to buy 2 pair of 17" snow chains cheap just leave me a message, you can have 'em. "Real tire chains" might be great for some people, but if I can't get them on and off my car quickly and easily, they are useless to me. I live 1400 feet up a 2 and a half mile dirt/gravel road that stays ice and snow covered for weeks after there is no snow anywhere else in our county. I am a small business owner, so if I can't get to work, I don't get paid, simple as that. I needed a product that was easy for a 40+ year old woman to get on and off by herself 6 days a week. For the last 3 winters I have been using Spikes-Spiders, which I actually think is a fairly good product as well, but after being put thru the rigors of mountain life, many of the plastic components of the Spikes-Spiders were beginning to...

Excellent Engineering, but did not fit my wheels
I couldn't wait to get these, given Seattle's unexpected week of ice. The chains fit several tire sizes with clear instructions for removing 0 - 4 sizing clips for each size (all four for my 225/50-R17). These are as easy on/off as this video shows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opugSM6xs58). No need to get knees wet, or lay on the ground. The chains ride only on the tread and not on the back of the wheel/tire, requiring no inside clearance. The thin cable chains add only about 10mm to the top clearance. The ice grips are aggressive and the chain angles will provide lateral slide resistance. The set came with the tools needed to remove the clips and mount the lugs. The clips are put on from the factory with something like "Lock-tite". Recommend a 7mm socket to replace the wrench and your own good set of metric Allen wrenches (3mm). Only problem was the lug locking mechanism was too shallow to fit my deeply recessed lugs on the standard...

Works as advertised, but check your lugnut/bolt size
The K-22s work just as advertised. It takes a little extra effort the first time or two, but once you get used to the system, these are the easiest chains to put on you'll ever own. The traction seems VERY good, and the chains tighten around the tire perfectly. It almost feels like they are part of the tire (which means them off sometimes takes a little effort - just be sure you have some gloves you don't mind getting a bit dirty) I drive a car with 21mm lugnuts. These ship with 17 and 19mm fittings, so be sure that if you have a car with larger lugnuts you get the adapter. (Prius owners, this means you). They are available from [...] if Amazon is sold out. I haven't had these for very long, but they seem to be very high quality. The warranty is 1 year, but I would expect them to last much longer. And yes, the price is a little high, but it is a lot less than the cost of damage rims and certainly a lot less than internal damage to your cars braking mechanisms...

great traction option at a great price
These cables are easy to install, and If installed properly will provide seasons of use at reasonable speeds. If you try to drive 25 or more with these on you are going to die. The posted speed limit when these are required in Ca. is 25 or less. I recommend less a then 20 mps as you may not be able to stop and the traction control device is required due to poor road conditions. Last but not least you get what you pay for so dont expect split chains at this price.

Awesome Chains!
I almost didn't buy these chains because of the price, but I decided to drop the cash and give them a try. What a brilliant decision! They install so easily and with the auto-tensioner, there's no more pulling some black circular rubber band thing and trying to hook it in 5 places along the chain. You hook the chains around the tire, slip the auto-tensioner piece through the hole until there is no slack and drive. Taking off the chains is just as easy. I feel sorry for the saps on the side of the road struggling with their chains, then end up paying some chain installer to help them out.

I received the chains three days prior to a surprise snow storm. I ran an errand an luckily threw the chains in my vehicle, because in order to get back home I had to chain up or I wouldn't have made it home. My vehicle is a rear wheel drive pickup, but I was going places that four wheel drive vehicles were having problems. My first installation was baptism under fire. The hardest part of the installation is hooking the back hoop of the chains. You want to make sure your vehicle has enough clearance between the tire and the body to allow you to reach in and make the connection. The connection is easy, but if your clearances are tight you may have some problems. After the back hoop is connected the rest of the installation is very simple. Once you have the chains mounted and you move the vehicle forward or backwards the chains will true up as advertised and tighten because of the design. I don't think most women would like the back hoop hookup because their sleeves are going to...

Only been a few weeks, but so far the only differences are that the Firestones are better handling, better wet traction but just slightly noisier (wet traction= noise). If you drive as much as I do, you are going to replace tires on this vehicle every year anyway.
